Is Honduras Diving Safe?

Honduras is often skipped over by travelers thanks to its bad reputation. Before planning Roatan dive trips there, travelers find themselves asking, “Is Honduras diving safe?” We all know the media is good at painting a terrifying image. Historically, it has been great at sounding the alarm and warning travelers that venturing to a particular country could be putting their lives at risk. State departments have also been known for issuing warnings as well. Doing so is part of their job. It is our responsibility as travelers to listen to these warnings and to take them seriously. However, it’s sometimes necessary to take these warnings with a gain of salt and remember that they are simply advisories. A travel warning doesn’t mean we should completely avoid visiting some of the world’s most incredible places, so don’t exclude Roatan when trying to plan a dive vacation.

How Safe Is Honduras?

One thing we must remember when considering travel to Honduras is the difference between traveling to the major cities and traveling to the smaller towns and islands. Areas like the island of Roatan are known for being much safer than cities like San Pedro Sula and Tequciagalpa. Access to Roatan is limited as people arrive through controlled points. The island is also equipped with police who are looking out specifically for tourists. As a general rule, major cities have higher crime rates. But even so, foreigners are very rarely targets of crime. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Honduras each year and return safely to their home country. The same is true for many other countries we consider “unsafe” to visit. If you’re unsure about traveling to Honduras, then taking a trip to Roatan is a great place to start.
